Woman carrying water

In Africa, much of the burden of collecting water falls on women and girls. Many walk up to 10 miles a day just to get water.   Girls are not going to school simply because there is not enough time in the day to collect water, take care of the household needs and go to school.

On our last trip to Kenya we met a woman that told us of another serious and disturbing affect that lack of access to water is having on women in Africa.   She said that she and many of the women in her village have been attacked by men waiting on the trail to the water sources.  They know the women are coming for water so they lie in wait to take advantage of them. Putting a well in a central and safe spot in a village can put an end to this.
